Who should you follow on twitter?

If you’re using twitter for business then here’s a handy guide to following.

  • Follow your customers/clients. They’ll more than likely follow back.
  • Follow your competition’s followers, but don’t follow too many at a time or you’ll end up in twitter jail (account suspension). Why is this a good idea? Each person you follow will receive a notification after which they’ll most likely read your profile, alerting them to your business providing the same product or service as your competitor. Make sense? Why do you think McDonalds often build next door to Burger King and vice versa.
  • Should I follow everyone that follows me? Pros – When you follow back it gives that other person a positive feeling and lets them know (or at least get the impression) that you as a business are interested in them too. Cons – This opens the facility for DMs which because they’re private might lead to inappropriate messages or abuse. Simply block or unfollow anyone that does this.

If I follow everyone how will I see tweets from people that I really want to read tweets from?

Here’s a simple solution, create a list. Make it private, and add the people whose twitter feeds you want to follow.  Then all you need to do is login to your account, click on your list and you’ll be able to see the twitter feed from the people you’ve added. Making your list private means that the people you whose accounts you add will not receive a notification, and those not added won’t feel left out.
